Welcome to our home on the web! St. James Presbyterian is a growing congregation dedicated to glorifying and enjoying God, and the many blessings He has given us. Our congregation was established in the early 1960's in order to serve the western end of Chatham, a small town in southwestern Ontario. And now, well into the third millenium, we are moving forward with a bold plan to make Christ accessible in ways that speak to the world that exists today, rather than the one we knew when this congregation was first established. That why we've made some radical changes not only in way we do things at St. James, but within the facility itself.

We have always had a great facility, with a beautiful, fully accessible sanctuary. Now we've revamped our worship space to make it much more versatile and usable. The choir loft and pulpit have now been converted into a large flat space, with broad stairs that can serve as risers when needed. This will allow us to use and combine both traditional and contemporary elements within our worship, thus helping us to make Christ accessible to a much wider variety of people. This is a vital change in these days in which older forms of worship simply don't speak to modern ears. With a reconfigured sanctuary we hope to address this issue in an effective, respectful way that honours God and reflects our committment, to spread His Good News. Of course, a good worship space is important, and is definitely one of St. James' assets, but our greatest strength is our people. We have a great time together worshiping and serving our community, and we truly enjoy each other's company doing so. With a strong music programme that includes traditional, contemporary and children's components, a fine Sunday School, and an excellent pastoral visitation team, we are well equipped to reach out to our community in God's name.

As part of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, we realize that we are reformed and constantly reforming. That means we have to be conscious of what we are doing, and why. That's exactly what we've been doing over the past couple of years: we have been trying to discern how to worship in a way that is true to God's Word, and speaks to the widest possible ages and tastes. While we can't satisfy everybody, after much prayerful and thoughtful work, we have decided to move away from two services towards a single service that is neither traditional or contemporary, but is instead "Message Driven." In format driven worship, the entire service is set in a fixed, inflexible way that does not always do justice to the message contained within it.

Message Driven worship allows the Biblical texts and the message derived from them to shape the liturgy for the day, or perhaps even for a given sermon series. By allowing the message to drive the worship format, we hope to offer a more engaging and authentic way of presenting God's word. Through the careful and prayerful use and combination of up to date multi-media technology, a variety of instruments, a skilled praise team, imaginative dramatic techniques, the best of traditional liturgical ideas and a broad range of music, the Message driven format promises great flexibility in teaching and sharing God's Word that will speak to every generation.

Our Message Driven worship takes place at 10am every Sunday morning! See you there!
