LEGO SDF-1 MACROSS

After working on my LEGO Valkyrie design (Check out my LEGO Valkyrie here) I decided to try building the SDF-1 Macross out of LEGO. The SDF-1 Macross is a giant spaceship that has a whole city inside it, but can transform into a giant robot. The Macross appears in Robotech and the original Japanese Macross Tv shows. I built a LEGO SDF-1 back when I was a kid, but it wasn't very good as I did not have any pictures of it so I had to build it from memory. All I had to go on was whatever I could remember about it from watching Robotech on TV. However this time around I had access to line art drawings of the Macross so I could do a better job. My LEGO skills are not that great, but I think my design captures the look of the Macross pretty well in both cruiser and Storm Attacker (AKA "Robot" mode).

The images on this page were generated using a program called MLCAD. To download this program or to download my LDraw dat files for the complete plans of my SDF-1 model, go to the Downloads section.

Click here to download the LDraw files of the complete plans for my Lego SDF-1 design. It is a zipped file so you'll need WINZIP, PKZIP or other program to unzip the files first. To use the plans you will need the LDraw program or other program that reads the LDraw format (see below).

What is LDraw? LDraw is a freeware program which can create Lego models in 3D. The original file format and software was created by James Jessiman, who passed away in July 1997. Programs based on James' original LDraw have been the conduit for sharing LEGO building ideas within the online LEGO enthusiast community. This community of CAD users (referred to as LCAD, for LEGO CAD) is constantly improving upon the system developing new utilities which utilize the LDraw format. Click here to visit the official LDraw site: www.ldraw.org where you can download the LDraw program.

If you find LDraw a little difficult to use on its own, you can find many other programs around the web that use the LDraw format. One example is MLCad (Mike's Lego CAD), which is a powerful CAD system specifically designed to create building instructions for your own Lego models and creations. MLCad reads and writes LDraw compatible files but uses a window based environment. (Runs on Windows 9.x, NT, 2000 or XP). I used MLCad to create the plans for my Valkyrie design. • Robotech.com is the official Robotech site. A lot of people in the Macross community dislike Robotech (and especially the company responsible for it - Harmony Gold). But personally, I have nothing against it.
