LEGO VF-1 VALKYRIE

Every since I first saw the Robotech T.V. series shown on North American T.V. in the mid 1980's I have been a fan of the transformable veritech fighter (called the Valkyrie in the original Japanese Macross T.V. series that Robotech was based on). As a kid, I collected lots of Transformers, but the the Valkyrie was always my favorite design. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a Valkyrie toy or the Transformer Jetfire - made by the makers of the Japanese Valkyrie toys. Thankfully, over the last couple of years (2002 & 2003) a few toy makers have released new Valkyrie toys including re-issuing the original Valkyrie toy designs, so I was finally able to get a real Valkyrie toy. However, before this, as an avid LEGO fan I decided to design my own LEGO Valkyrie. Over the years I have made many attempts at a LEGO Valkyrie. Some designs have been better than others. However, my best LEGO Valkyrie design to date is shown in the following images.

The images on this page were generated using a program called MLCAD. To download this program or to download my LDraw dat files for the complete plans of my Valkyrie model, go to the Downloads section.

Pros of my Valkyrie design.

  • Fairly compact, yet large enough to fit a miniconfig LEGO person in the cockpit
  • Fully transformable (the only removable part is the head)
  • Robust enough to play with and transform without falling apart

Cons of my Valkyrie design.

  • Not to scale
  • The transformation is not exactly like the original design (for example, the tail fins do not fold accross each other for Battroid and Gerwalk mode)
  • There is no landing gear in the fighter mode
  • No extras like fast packs or missiles (personally, I can't stand the fast packs, armour etc. so I didn't make any)
  • Not a lot of articulation
  • Kind of "chunky" or "blocky" looking, but what do you expect, it's LEGO!

Click here to download the LDraw files of the complete plans for my Valkyrie design. It is a zipped file so you'll need WINZIP, PKZIP or other program to unzip the files first. To use the plans you will need the LDraw program or other program that reads the LDraw format (see below).

What is LDraw? LDraw is a freeware program which can create Lego models in 3D. The original file format and software was created by James Jessiman, who passed away in July 1997. Programs based on James' original LDraw have been the conduit for sharing LEGO building ideas within the online LEGO enthusiast community. This community of CAD users (referred to as LCAD, for LEGO CAD) is constantly improving upon the system developing new utilities which utilize the LDraw format. Click here to visit the official LDraw site: www.ldraw.org where you can download the LDraw program.

If you find LDraw a little difficult to use on its own, you can find many other programs around the web that use the LDraw format. One example is MLCad (Mike's Lego CAD), which is a powerful CAD system specifically designed to create building instructions for your own Lego models and creations. MLCad reads and writes LDraw compatible files but uses a window based environment. (Runs on Windows 9.x, NT, 2000 or XP). I used MLCad to create the plans for my Valkyrie design. • Robotech.com is the official Robotech site. A lot of people in the Macross community dislike Robotech (and especially the company responsible for it - Harmony Gold). But personally, I have nothing against it.
